Introduction
Chemistry is now my favorite subject, but in the beginning, it was a boring subject for me. On the first test of chemistry I scored “Zero” marks out of 20 even though I attempted all questions in detail but all answers were wrong. I have surprised after seeing my test score. That day I decided this will not happen to me in the future. What I did to learn or understand chemistry is going to write for you in this post How to study chemistry?
Studying chemistry can be a daunting task for many students. However, with the right approach and effective strategies, you can not only understand the subject but also excel in it. In this comprehensive guide, we will explore ten proven strategies that will help you study chemistry more efficiently and effectively. From understanding the fundamentals to mastering complex concepts, these strategies will empower you to achieve success in your chemistry studies.
Let’s start:
- Clear the basic terms of chemistry: To learn chemistry this is the basic requirement that you should understand the basic terms like atoms, ions, molecules, elements, symbols, atomic numbers, mass numbers, reactants, products, chemical equations, chemical equations, types of chemical equations, atomic theory, nucleus, orbits, electrons, protons, neutrons, molecular formulae, the structure of atoms, electronic configurations, branches of chemistry, and applications of chemistry in everyday life. So, whenever you have started to learn chemistry it is my advice that you should clear the all terms with the help of your supervisor/mentor/tutor like me to study chemistry.
- Build fundamental concepts of chemistry strong: First of all, understand the meaning and definition of chemistry. After that, you make your focus on atomic theory, the mole concept, Hund’s Rule, Aufbau’s Principle, Octet Rule, differences between elements, atoms, and molecules, the nomenclature of molecules, branches of chemistry like inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, and analytical chemistry. While you are building these concepts strong follow the following type of questions in your mind: What is…? Why is ….? How is …..? The answers to these types of questions will make your chemistry fundamentals strong. Again in these, you take guidance from your supervisor/mentor/tutor like me.
- Practice: I think you know the proverb that ” Practice makes a human perfect” Now may be one question will be in your mind that the actual proverb was ” Practice makes a man perfect” but why I used human instead of man the reason is that we are missing women in the proverb and it will be an injustice for a woman. So, human will be the correct word. Now come to the chemistry, it needs more attention and dedication in comparison to the other subjects. To build your interest in chemistry you should practice the concepts of it by taking different types of examples to study chemistry. If you face any doubt during practice, then you should it with your supervisor/mentor/tutor like me.
- Don’t follow shortcuts: Chemistry becomes a very interesting subject after when you have understood all the basic terms and fundaments of chemistry as mentioned in points 2 and 3. Shorts may help you but it will be a temporary help but not permanent. If you want to build your chemistry knowledge strong, then it is advisable that you should not follow these shortcuts. So, always try to understand the fundamental concept behind chemical reactions or concepts. To study chemistry you should learn it step by step without any shortcut trick.
- Do not follow the syllabus: This means that most of the time, the syllabus of any course mentioned only mentioned the headings and topics, but missed the basic concepts required to understand the headings and topics. So, with the syllabus mentioned in your course, you should try to search or discuss the basic terms and fundamentals with discussions with your supervisor/mentor/tutor like me. This will give a broad idea of the topics mentioned in your syllabus to study chemistry in an effective way.
- Learning by doing: Chemistry is an experimental subject. Here, you can validate the concepts by performing experiments in the laboratory. It should be remembered that these experiments should be performed under the supervision of your supervisor or your teacher. Don’t try to do any experiment alone, it could be hazardous for you and your laboratory. Follow the procedure and laboratory protocols before, during, and after the experiment. So, performing more and more practical experiments may help your journey to study chemistry easily and build your chemistry strong, and will boost your confidence.
- Good Books: Whenever you are alone or with your supervisor or you are performing experiments or preparing notes for your examinations good books are very important for your journey. As you know Books are our best friends. You should have a good collection of chemistry books whether you are preparing notes or performing experiments. We may have provided the list of good books as per your needs on our website book section page. You can visit the page and choose the best books as per your requirements to study chemistry.

8. Establish a Strong Foundation
Building a strong foundation is essential in chemistry. Start by understanding the basic concepts and principles. Focus on topics such as atomic structure, the periodic table, chemical bonding, and stoichiometry. Mastering these fundamental concepts will provide a solid framework for understanding more advanced topics.
9. Active Learning with Visual Aids
Engage in active learning by using visual aids such as molecular models, diagrams, and illustrations. These visual representations can help you visualize abstract concepts and enhance your understanding of chemical structures and reactions.
10. Practice Regularly
Chemistry requires practice. Solve a variety of problems, including numerical calculations and conceptual questions. Practice not only reinforces your understanding but also helps you apply the concepts to different scenarios. Utilize textbooks, online resources, and practice books to access a wide range of problems.
11. Create a Study Schedule
Develop a study schedule that allocates dedicated time for chemistry. Plan your study sessions in advance and ensure consistency. Breaking down your study time into smaller, focused sessions can enhance concentration and retention.
12. Seek Help and Clarification
Don’t hesitate to seek help and clarification when you encounter difficulties. Reach out to your chemistry teacher, classmates, or online forums for assistance. Clearing your doubts and understanding complex topics will prevent misconceptions from hindering your progress.
13. Form Study Groups
Collaborating with peers can be beneficial when studying chemistry. Form study groups to discuss concepts, solve problems, and share insights. Explaining concepts to others helps reinforce your understanding while gaining new perspectives.
14. Utilize Online Resources
Take advantage of online resources, such as educational websites, video tutorials, and interactive simulations. These resources offer alternative explanations, visual demonstrations, and practice quizzes to supplement your learning.
15. Review and Summarize
Regularly review and summarize your notes after each study session. Summarizing the main ideas and key concepts helps reinforce your understanding and facilitates easier revision when preparing for exams.
16. Practice Time Management
Chemistry requires time management skills. Prioritize your study time based on the importance and difficulty of topics. Allocate more time to challenging areas while ensuring a balanced approach to cover the entire syllabus.
17. Stay Engaged and Curious
Approach chemistry with curiosity and enthusiasm. Stay engaged by exploring real-life applications and connecting concepts to the world around you. Embrace the beauty of chemistry and its role in everyday life.
Conclusion
